My greyhound has some arthritis but we really alleviated a lot of her pain by giving her human doses of glucosamine and condroitin that you can get at Costco.
I get great doggie glucosamine chewables at Trader Joes. My dogs take them fine with their dry food and its only $9.99 for 100 pills. If the dogs are really sore after a hike or swim I will also give them a dose of buffered aspirin. I'm not a doctor but these are things that have worked for me. :)
